Tell us about Calian, Advanced Technologies!

Calian, Advanced Technologies (formerly Calian SED) is a global supplier of communication systems, products and services. We provide infrastructure for satellite, terrestrial wireless and wired applications, including antennas, RF systems, gateways and network management solutions for controlling and monitoring network resources, equipment and services. We also design and manufacture products for the ag tech, composites, defence and nuclear industries.

Additionally, we provide contract electronics design, manufacturing, test, certification and full product lifecycle management services in a variety of industries. When combined with our engineering capabilities, we can help businesses turn their visions into reality.

As of 2021, we have almost 600 employees, with over 450 in Saskatchewan and over 400 at our headquarters in Innovation Place.

We are a business unit of Calian Ltd., a publicly traded company on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol CGY. Calian is also in the health, learning, and IT and cyber security market segments.

What is Calian, Advanced Technologies’ proudest achievement?

We’re proud of our ability to continue to grow and prosper in the highly competitive, extremely technical industries we’re in from right here in Saskatoon. We opened for business in 1965, we’ve remained headquartered here, and we have customers around the world. Part of our strategic growth has been to acquire companies in Ontario, Quebec and Germany, and even with that increased global footprint, we’re very proud to stay firmly rooted in Saskatoon.

How has Calian, Advanced Technologies adapted during the pandemic?

We adapted very quickly to keep all our products and services operating around the world because our customers depend on us for their critical infrastructure. We simply could not take time off to figure out COVID-19. Our employees who could work from home, did work from home and we set up processes, procedures and hardware for everyone to continue to stay connected. Employees in our on-site manufacturing facility could not work from home so we immediately implemented safety precautions. We split shifts to ensure fewer people were in our building at the same time. We provide paid time off throughout COVID-19. We encourage all our employees to look after their mental health. We have remained connected, through video and audio calls, to ensure the interruption to our services was absolutely minimal.

What’s one thing Calian, Advanced Technologies cannot function without?

Our team. We really do have a fantastic team of absolute experts in their fields. Together, we thrive. We operate in a rapidly changing industry and we always need to be one step ahead of industry developments and the competition. The team excels at that.

Why do you love working in Saskatchewan?

We love being part of a community of like-minded people. We love the Saskatchewan work ethic, the adaptability and the innovative spirit. The entire province was built on that mind set, and it’s what has made us successful.

What does the future of Saskatchewan tech look like to you?

There has never been a better time for growth in the Saskatchewan tech sector. Our post-secondary institutions are ensuring that are homegrown talent pool continues to increase, and we are continually engaging with them because we want those students to see us as their employer of choice. We want our best and brightest to stay here in Saskatchewan. We’ve had rapid yet manageable growth over the last 56 years in Saskatchewan’s tech sector and we’re looking forward to many bright years ahead as we continue to innovate and expand.

How does Innovation Place help you thrive in Saskatchewan’s tech sector? (We had to ask!)

We’ve been an Innovation Place tenant since 1987, and we wouldn’t want to be headquartered anywhere else. Our building was built specifically for us. Our space is 125,000 square feet, open air, and gives us the capability to easily expand and redesign the layout based on our manufacturing needs. It’s an agile and dynamic space we wouldn’t have found anywhere else. We’d invite you in to show you around but it is also a fully secure facility.

What’s the #1 piece of advice you give to people?

Listen, make connections and watch for partnerships. The opportunities are there. They’re just waiting to be found.
